Hello Dear Readers!
A bunch of you are new subscribers who signed up here recently and it’s been on my To-Do List to get over here and say Hello and Welcome!! to you. And also, Hey there, remember me? to those of you not-so-new subscribers. Also, it’s been on my mind that I need to explain the paucity of content here for the last few months.
If you happened to read the Welcome email that arrived upon subscribing, you might remember that this blog was introduced as an informal space to share the thoughts kicking around my brain, along a theme of Our Changing Times—any musings of a spiritual, psychological, cultural, or material/physical nature. It was going to be “a kind of holistic blog at its heart. From a faith-based POV.” And . . . that’s so far not what it’s become. I’m not quite sure what it is, other than not really happening. Which is not to say I’ve had no thoughts kicking around my brain.
In fact, as anyone knows who reads my other blog, By My Reckoning (which quite is a few of you, actually), I’ve been thinking—and writing!—with shocking regularity (shocking to anyone who’s been following my blog for the last 6 years). Publishing weekly, in fact. So—LOTS of thoughts. Which pretty much all fall into the category of political, which is not everyone’s cup of tea. Even (especially?) during an election year. But this brings me to my point, here . . . The Explanation.
I do incline to follow current events and have plenty of ponderings to share. In fact, By My Reckoning was created six years ago (before being moved to Substack) for that purpose, but because my first few posts dwelt on neutral topics I ended up feeling painted into a corner, that I couldn’t in fairness shift to political opinion pieces that might feel controversial or alienating to some subset of my readers. On top of that, I was battling a pernicious inner critic—I call her Madame Editor Leah—who did a bang-up job convincing me that my thoughts weren’t worth sharing anyhow.
More often than not I believed her, so I rarely wrote.
Heart of Curiosity was conceived and created as an effort to do an end-run around Madame EL, and initially it kinda sorta worked except for the small fact that, again, my initial posts were topically outside the realm of politics and more explicitly religious, so again, to the extent my thoughts circled the political arena I felt I shouldn’t disrupt the vibe here with them. (Am I overthinking everything? Probably. Thank you Madame.)
So here’s the current situation and the bottom line: as some of you already know, I have recently dumped my editorial [W]itch into the rhetorical garbage and have been sharing prolifically (for me) over at By My Reckoning. However, I only have so much time to write and so one blog post per week pretty much maxes me out. Which means I have to choose where I’m posting, and during the election, with political thoughts abounding, I chose to take a risk and impose them on my BMR subscribers per my original plan back-when, hoping they wouldn’t all leave. A handful understandably have, but I’ve gained well over 200 subscribers since I shifted to regular content there, so I’m surviving the guilt. And I still have this blog, which I want to keep as a sacred space for apolitical topics. More to the point, as a sacred space for thinking out loud from an openly religious perspective.
Lastly, given that a lot of you new HoC subscribers joined simultaneously with your By My Reckoning subscription, presumably because the BMR Welcome email directed you to this blog for more regular content (lol), I apologize for that erroneous message. I had forgotten that I’d changed my BMR Welcome to encourage subscriptions here, and have since revised that email to stop the duplicitous redirect. The plan going forward will be that this blog is where my religiously oriented writing will be shared; By My Reckoning will be continue as my politics/current events blog. Occasionally I will dual post if I write something that I think reasonably speaks to both spaces. But if you don’t feel like sticking around for the Godly content here, and/or believe you subscribed under a false impression, please feel free to unsubscribe and I won’t take it personally. If you want to figure out whether it’s worth staying you can find the general tone for content here by perusing previous posts. Click here for the archive.
So . . . all that said: Thank you for staying here (if you do) and I do have some thoughts brewing that I may be sharing here in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, may all my American subscribers have a warm and happy Thanksgiving celebrated with family and friends, counting all blessings, large and small.
Thanks for reading. I’m grateful you’re with me. #blessed 🙏🏻💖🥂
Thanks, Leah. I enjoy your other Substack very much. I may unsubscribe from here at some point, but not yet. And if I do unsubscribe it will only be due to triaging priorities. I look forward to seeing what you may share here next. Happy and peaceful sweet Thanksgiving.
